Victorian Red Brass Lighter Case
$140.00

Presenting lighter adornment for the distinguished pyromaniac. Keep your fire in this sexy handmade lighter case and enhance your everyday life. An ordinary lighter that is elevated with a beautiful, handcrafted adornment makes it more extraordinary. Carry this and be the envy of your friends. Nah, for real though. Everyone will know it's yours and try really hard not to steal it from you! Fits on standard size lighters. Lighter is included with purchase!

About the process:

Repurposed materials left their mark during the process of constructing this handcrafted red brass lighter case. After eating some vine-ripened tomatoes from my local grocery store, I saved the mesh bag they came in. Instead of just tossing it into the landfill, I asked myself how I can make use of this material once more? This remnant of consumer culture had another use. I imprinted the mesh bag into the red brass sheet metal with a rolling mill. After annealing (relaxing the metal with fire), it is formed and carefully soldered along the seam. A base is soldered to the bottom, keeping the lighter secured in place. The piece is then sanded to take out any scratches and remove excess solder. Next, the patina is applied and then selectively removed from the surface in a way that accentuates the textural contrast. Finally, the piece is cleaned and coated with a spray sealant. It all started with a produce bag, a piece of red brass sheet metal and the desire to adorn objects.

Sophora Secundiflora Mandala

Every year, Texas State Galleries celebrates distinguished alumni of the School of Art + Design with an exhibition of selected works. This year, the Galleries presents a solo-exhibition of large-scale wall installations by alumna Shalena White. White’s Seed + Rock Mandalas reconsider conventional notions of preciousness by embracing the potential of raw materials, materials so removed in today’s technology-obsessed culture. In so doing, her works inspire a reverence for the sacred nature of seemingly mundane substances, and the information they reveal about cultural histories + the materials’ physical origins.
