About the process:
Repurposed materials left their mark during the process of constructing this handcrafted red brass lighter case. After eating some vine-ripened tomatoes from my local grocery store, I saved the mesh bag they came in. Instead of just tossing it into the landfill, I asked myself how I can make use of this material once more? This remnant of consumer culture had another use. I imprinted the mesh bag into the red brass sheet metal with a rolling mill. After annealing (relaxing the metal with fire), it is formed and carefully soldered along the seam. A base is soldered to the bottom, keeping the lighter secured in place. The piece is then sanded to take out any scratches and remove excess solder. Next, the patina is applied and then selectively removed from the surface in a way that accentuates the textural contrast. Finally, the piece is cleaned and coated with a spray sealant. It all started with a produce bag, a piece of red brass sheet metal and the desire to adorn objects.
